Carignan

Often relegated to blending, Carignan is a high-acid, high-tannin grape capable of remarkable depth when grown from old vines. In Southern France, particularly Languedoc and Priorat, it reveals black cherry, spice, and earthy garrigue notes. Once dismissed as rustic, low-yielding vines now produce complex, structured wines with great aging potential. Carbonic maceration enhances its juicy red fruit, making for lighter, fresher expressions. With firm tannins and robust acidity, Carignan pairs beautifully with grilled meats and hearty stews. It thrives in hot, dry climates, where it develops rich concentration without sacrificing vibrancy. An underappreciated grape with serious potential.
