Tasting note
Lush and generous Riesling with rounded tropical fruits given definition by tangy gooseberry and a breath of smoke and flint, with a fragrance of orange zest on the finish.
Viticulture
Berg Schlossberg (“Castle Mountain”) sits on a Rhine bend west of Rüdesheim. Rheingau’s steepest vineyard, its vines climb a 45% slope between 120–160m, supported by stone walls. South-facing and warmed by river reflections, it enjoys great sunshine. Red slate and quartzite soils retain heat. Its name comes from the ruins of 13th-century Schloss Ehrenfels.
Vinification
After harvesting, the grapes were macerated for a short time (15-18 hours) before pressing. This step achieved very clear and highly aromatic juice, adding more intensity to the wine. Fermentation and maturation was mostly in large, old oak barrels (50-70 years old) for 19 months.
Food Match
The balance of freshness and richness give some exciting possibilities. Try it with grilled fish with exotic salads, or lightly roasted roasted beef with lemon garlic marinade.
