Introducing Catena: the world’s most admired wine brand joins Enotria

We are excited to announce that Enotria is now the UK importer and distributor for Catena and Catena Zapata. A name synonymous with Argentina’s fine-wine, Catena is celebrated worldwide for its pioneering work in high-altitude viticulture, and for helping lead the global renaissance of Malbec.

Why Catena?

Founded in 1902, Catena has been a leader in elevating Malbec to international acclaim and is recognized for its pioneering work in high-altitude viticulture. The winery was named the World’s Most Admired Wine Brand 2025 by Drinks International and the World’s #1 Best Vineyard by The World’s Best Vineyards (William Reed, 50 Best).

The estate is also known for pushing the boundaries of terroir research, with a focus on extreme-altitude sites at the foothills of the Andes - work that has helped redefine how the trade and consumers understand Argentina’s greatest vineyard areas.

A shared ambition with Enotria

This new partnership marks the next chapter for Catena in the UK, with Enotria representing the full Catena and Catena Zapata portfolio. The focus will be to deepen Catena’s presence in premium on-trade and independent retail, bringing even more visibility to the range and its vineyard stories.

As Dr. Laura Catena shared: “We are excited to begin a new chapter with Enotria. Their vision, expertise, and commitment to fine wine will help us continue to elevate Argentine wine and delight the UK’s wine lovers.”

Catena Zapata differentiates itself through:

  • Uncompromising Focus on Quality: The guiding principle for the winery is to produce wines that can stand with the best in the world, a vision established by Nicolás Catena Zapata in the 1980s. This commitment to excellence ensures the wines meet the high standards expected by fine wine collectors and investors.
  • Pioneering High-Altitude Viticulture: Catena Zapata was instrumental in discovering and developing extreme high-altitude vineyards in the Andean foothills of Mendoza, such as the acclaimed Adrianna Vineyard. This innovative approach demonstrated that world-class Malbec and other varieties could be grown in these unique terroirs, creating a distinct and valuable market position.
  • Scientific Research and Innovation: Through the Catena Institute of Wine, the brand focuses on rigorous research into soil, climate, plant selection, and ageing potential, and has published 37 papers in peer-reviewed journals. This scientific approach ensures consistency and continuous improvement in quality, which is highly valued in the secondary market where consistency and age-worthiness are key.
  • Sustainability and Social Responsibility: The brand's commitment to sustainable practices and community support, including providing housing and education scholarships for employees' families, adds to its positive image and aligns with modern consumer and trade values.

Explore Catena Family Wines’ Range

Ever since 1902, when Italian immigrant to Argentina, Nicola Catena, planted his first Malbec in Mendoza, the Catena’s have pioneered Argentine wine: from resurrecting the ancient Malbec grape, to preserving ancient biodiverse plant selections, to planting vineyards at high altitudes where no one had dared to plant before. The visionary work of Nicolás Catena Zapata set a new standard for quality and demonstrated Argentina’s potential to produce grand cru level wines. This legacy continues under the leadership of his children and grandchildren.

Catena High Mountain Vines

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration, and a distinct varietal identity. These wines capture the different expressions of each varietal across multiple altitudes, blending them in a signature style.

Catena Appellation

Wines labelled from a particular appellation/IG must be sourced 100% from vineyards in the IG. The rural towns of Lunlunta, Vista Flores, San Carlos, Tupungato, Agrelo, Paraje Altamira and la consulta lend their names to the beautiful historic vineyards that surround them. The flavours of our Catena Appellation "village" wines express the diversity of terroir and the historic farming customs of these local families.

DV Catena Histórico

The brand is named after Don Domingo Vicente Catena, Laura & Adrianna Catena’s grandfather. D.V. Catena Tinto Histórico is made to honour Don Domingo's legendary abilities as a master blender. With a singular sense of passion and dedication, he devoted his life to improving the cultivation of the vine in Mendoza.

Catena Alta

ALTA means high, for CATENA’s High-Altitude revolution – Nicolás Catena planted at high altitude looking for a cooler climate that would allow him to make wines with optimal natural acidity, complexity, and the ability to age. HISTORIC ROWS refers to the row-by-row selection for the Alta wines from CATENA’s Historic Vineyards – every vineyard has a sweet spot – that is where CATENA ALTA comes from.

Explore CATENA ZAPATA’s Range

Founded in 1902 by Italian Nicola Catena, Catena Zapata is Argentina’s oldest winery still in the founding family’s hands. The winery architecture is distinguished by its Mayan-inspired pyramid design. Catena Zapata is known for its pioneering role in resurrecting the Malbec grape and in discovering extreme high-altitude terroirs in the Andean foothills of Mendoza.

Following in her father Nicolás Catena Zapata’s footsteps, fourth-generation vintner Dr. Laura Catena leads the winery and its think tank, the Catena Institute of Wine. The institute, founded by Dr. Catena in 1995, collaborates with local and foreign universities and has the ambitious mission of advancing Argentina’s winemaking regions for another 200 years. Today, the Catena sisters, Laura and Adrianna, lead the way in preserving Argentina’s old vines and the country’s ungrafted, massale Malbec heritage.

Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino

This wine represents a family's journey to produce an Argentine Malbec that can stand with the great wines of the world. Old Vines from the Catena Zapata Family Vineyards, Nicasia and Angélica.

Ten Centuries of Life, Death and Rebirth. The epic tale of the noble Malbec grape is like no other, and the label for Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino pays tribute to the variety’s history in France and its rise in Argentina. Four female figures embody different landmarks in the history of the grape. Eleanor of Aquitaine represents the birth of Malbec. She is a strong, Old World presence, lingering at the bridge in Cahors, where Malbec came into its own. Next, the Immigrant symbolises the movement to the New World and the unknown explorers and adventurers who connected Europe with the Americas. Phylloxera personifies the death of Malbec in the Old World, which enabled its rebirth in the new. Finally, there is Catena Zapata, represented by Adrianna Catena, who depicts birth, earth, and motherhood, sharing the riches of the New World. Today, the Catena family’s fourth generation leads the high-altitude renaissance in Argentina.

Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard

Named after Laura & Adrianna’s great grandmother Nicasia, this wine is made from a plant-by-plant selection of the best lots within Catena Zapata’s vineyards. Located in the far southerly growing region of Altamira in La Consulta, the Nicasia Vineyard is the only planting of the special Catena Selection of Malbec Cuttings in this traditional area for Malbec. La Consulta was Nicolás Catena’s father Domingo’s preferred Malbec location.

Catena Zapata Birth of Cabernet

Once upon a time, a bee (or two) went from the flowers of a Cabernet Franc vine to the flowers of a Sauvignon Blanc vine, and a seedling child began to ripen inside the mother grapes. Then came war, and the vineyard was abandoned. Years later, the vintner returned to his land and found a new vine. He tasted the grapes and fell in love. It was Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our allegory of vines as animals gives a whimsical rendering of the story. The fox - Cabernet Franc - has attributes of Cardinal Richelieu, the first famous lover of the said grape. The siren - part woman, part bird - represents Sauvignon Blanc in all her savage glory. On the right, their child - Cabernet Sauvignon - is depicted as a world traveller, adventuring from the French Pyrenees to the Catena Zapata pyramid at the foothills of the Andes in Argentina.

Adrianna Vineyard

Located in the high-altitude, stony soils of the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley, near the Andes mountains, Adrianna Vineyard is known for its cool climate, intense sunlight, and unique limestone/riverbed soils that produce exceptional Chardonnay and Malbec. It has been called the Grand Cru of South America. The Adrianna Vineyard holds more 100-points ratings than any other vineyard in South America. Each cuvée is hand-harvested from select parcels to reflect the distinct and incomparable terroirs that make up this special vineyard.

Adrianna Vineyard.jpg

In the 1980s, third-generation vintner Nicolás Catena Zapata, from a family of Italian immigrants, dared to believe that his native Argentina could make a South American Grand Cru. He found it in Adrianna Vineyard. At 5,000 feet elevation, the vineyard’s high-altitude location, combined with a cool, sunny climate and alluvial limestone soils, gave rise to the Adrianna Vineyard “Vinos de Parcela,” or Parcel Wines.
