Tasting note

Peach, mandarin orange, marmalade notes. Absolutely dry and yet soft and winsome, pineapple fruit on the palate - generous in flavour while nervy and lean in texture. The long finish is already showing the beginnings of complexity, and this should grow as the wine matures. This could age superbly, but it's already an impressive glass of wine.

In the press

97/100 - The wild herb and wet-stone complexity of this extraordinary dry riesling is compelling, and together with the very stony acidity it drives the wine over the palate. So intense and forthright that it feels like a big wine, yet when you look at it closely it is actually medium-bodied and extremely focused. Super-long finish. Drink from release.

95/100 - The 2024 Karthäuser Laubenheim Riesling Trocken is intense and floral rather than fruity on the pure yet intense nose that represents the Rotliegend terroir of the cru perfectly well. Full-bodied, elegant and generous yet refined on the palate, this is a mouth-filling and textural, seemingly soft yet on the finish vital, savory and persistently mineral Riesling with enormous vitality and stunning acidity. There are plummy notes on the aftertaste and fine tannin grip. Drink 2025-2050

Vineyard

This outstanding single vineyard above Laubenheim forms a valley basin that opens to the southwest. In this amphitheater-like setting, the heat is well absorbed and stored in the weathered red sandstone soil. As a result, the grapes here always ripen earlier than usual, producing calm, powerful, spicy-fruity Rieslings with a firm structure and restrained acidity.

Viticulture

Weingut Tesch was an early adopter of environmentally friendly viticulture and unstinting care for the vineyards. The estate's dedication to sustainability means that it works without the use of herbicides, insecticides or mineral fertilizers.

Vinification

Riesling grown without herbicides, insecticides or mineral fertiliser on weathered sandstone in a southwest-facing ampitheatre, making Karthauser the earliest site to ripen. Fermented and aged on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks.
