Tasting note
Medium ruby colour. High-toned red fruit notes of raspberry and Santa Rosa plum on the nose, layered with floral hints of rose petals and violets, plus dried herbs like sage and bay leaf, old cedar box and a touch of dried tobacco. Bright, fresh acidity with a structured, food-friendly profile.
Unique Selling Point
The Rodenos were the first to plant Sangiovese in 1985 in Napa Valley, where it remains rare today. The clone is thought to be Sangiovese Grosso and the Villa Ragazzi 100% Sangiovese is often likened to Brunello by experts. Corti.
Viticulture
Sustainable, cover crops, minimum tillage, compost.
Vinification
Crushed and fermented on the skins/seeds in stainless steel tank, racked off into once-used French oak barrels (source: Quintessa Winery) to age for 19 months. After bottling, stored in winery's cellar until shipped.
Food Match
Porcini risotti, pasta with red sauces, grilled steak, grilled vegetables, grilled salmon, aged Gouda, roasted tomatoes or tomato confit, Bengali 5-spice chicken, hot Italian sausage, ham, pork roast and ribollita.
