Tasting note
Fontanafredda's Barolo is fabulously rich and velvety, with wonderful, frosted rosehip and autumnal character. Full-bodied and sumptuous with suave tannins and excellent balance, it opens up to show foresty nuances, and hints of roasted chestnuts, beeswax polish and a swell of delicious fruit that builds on the finish.
In the press
90/100 - An intense wine with funky character and aromas of flowers and blood oranges. Sweet fruit on the palate, with a medium to full body, crisp acidity and a tight, dusty finish. Drink or hold.
Viticulture
Growing locations: villages south of Alba. Vineyard features: Located mid- and high-hillside (300-400 m a.s.l) with various exposures (except for the north), they are planted on soil of Miocene-Helvetian and Tortonian origin, which is characteristically packed with limestone and marl.
Vinification
A cuvée of terroirs from eight villages, with a high proportion from the 'Bussia' cru. Fermented in stainless steel at 30-31 °C, then macerated on the skins several days to complete maceration. It is aged for 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks before bottling, and then mellowed for at least eight months in the bottle before release.
Food Match
Ideal with rich red meats and with medium or mature cheeses it is perfect as an after dinner wine.
