Tasting note
Arguably the world's finest Airén wine. Praised by Jancis Robinson as 'superb' and 'ridiculously inexpensive.' Luis Gutierrez of The Wine Advocate marvels at its excitement. Exhibiting white nectarine, peach, blanched almond and cider apple notes. Brisk, bright, lean and lengthy. Crafted by acclaimed winemaker Elias López Montero, this gem comes from ungrafted vines on their own roots. Organically farmed, a masterpiece of Airén.
In the press
The first single-vineyard Airén is the 2019 Las Tinadas Airén de Pie Franco, but more vintages should follow in the future. Pie Franco means "ungrafted" in Spanish, which is how the vineyard was planted. His grandparents said it was the best Airén vineyard they had, and now it's organically farmed. The grapes fermented in a 5,000-liter stainless steel vat with yeasts selected from this very same vineyard that they saw were unique. They matured the wine with lees for four months in 100-year-old 4,500-liter tinajas, following the local tradition. The 70-year-old vines are planted on limestone-rich soils at 740 meters in altitude. It was very surprising, serious austere and mineral, a balanced and fresh white from a warm place and a warm vintage, with insinuating aromas and terrific balance in the palate, focused, long and tasty. Who could imagine Airén could be this exciting?
Gorgeous nose, fresh stone fruit, nice suggestion of florality. Has good richness and texture, lime and mandarin skin. Fresh and sherbety twang on the layered structured finish. This is so bright and enjoyable yet with wonderful texture throughout. Drink 2021 – 2026.
Viticulture
Planted on ancient soils in the Tomelloso subregion of Castilla la Mancha, the fruit is grown on ungrafted and organically farmed bush vines planted in rocky and limey soil, 3 meters deep. Manually harvested which allows the selection of only the very best clusters of each plant. This is a Single vineyard planted in the year 1950 “pie franco” system.
Vinification
The must is extracted by decantation. and then fermentation takes place at 16 ºC for 10 days. Using an artisanal approach the wine is settled for natural clarification. Aging with the lees for 4 months in clay vats (terracotta amphorae) and then 4 months in stainless steel tank.
Food Match
Mineral, complex and round, this is perfect to accompany seafood, salads, all kinds of fish and white meat.
