Tasting note
Deep, clear, amber-caramel appearance. Notes of apple, spiced plum, toasted crumble, caramelized sugar, maple, pecan notes. Deep, intense palate: leather, date, fig hints. Rich, full-bodied, cedary finish. Small sip, big impact. Impressive mouthfeel, enduring. Wow.
In the press
The solera range includes the NV Palo Cortado 1/8, whose origin is a solera from Fernando Méndez, an "almacenista" who never bottled wine. They estimate it is perhaps 35 to 40 years old and it has the characteristics and technical data to confirm this. It also has some biological/sharp character that might point to a Sanlúcar origin, but it's really unknown. Brothers Fernando and Francisco Asencio Alonso purchased the facilities and wines from Pedro Romero in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and started their own project. I've tasted the first bottles, mostly old wines of different origin, including Pedro Romero, Gaspar Florido and Fernando Méndez, that are often presented in square and unusual bottles and wear heavy price tags. There is a purchased Manzanilla, some solera wines and the top range is made up of different single barrel bottlings. Some wines are truly exceptional.
Vinification
100% Palomino from the Jerez Superior region, aged 35-40 years in 600 litre old American oak casks from the Fernando Méndez solera. There is a suggestion that this may have undergone some ageing in the coastal city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, although this is not known for certain.
