Driven by tradition and precision
Markus Molitor took the helm of his family’s estate in 1984 at just 20 years old, determined to restore Mosel Riesling the prestigious reputation it enjoyed during its golden age. Molitor’s mission was clear: produce wines that are unmistakably reflective of their origin - expressive, age worthy, and utterly authentic. Over more than three decades, he has built the estate from a small holding into one of the largest hands-on, family-run wineries in the Mosel, now spanning around 120 hectares across the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer.
Each individual Molitor wine - whether white or red; dry, off-dry or sweet – reflects the potential of its vineyard and vintage. Each is as singular, authentic and expressive as possible. This presupposes strict selection, precise handwork and calculated scrutiny of each individual berry. So, it is no surprise that the grapes are harvested manually in multiple passes by experienced staff and then subjected to further selection in the cellar, all under the watchful eye of Markus Molitor. Because only scrupulous separation of each different ripeness level and further separation of individual berries, leads to the highest qualities.
A master of terroir
Markus Molitor’s holdings sit on some of the Mosel’s most legendary slopes, from Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr to Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Doctor and Saar’s Scharzhofberger. These steep, slate-rich sites yield Rieslings of crystalline minerality, intense aromatic definition, and remarkable longevity. Molitor wines are literally rooted in their slate soils. Deliberately sensitive and restrained vineyard management, low yields and late harvest of physiologically ripe grapes make for a matchless wealth of flavour extracts. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous using native yeasts, and wines mature slowly in large oak casks in cellar spaces carved into the hillside, with no additives or corrective measures.
The estate’s portfolio encompasses the full stylistic range of Mosel Riesling: from bone dry Trocken, through off-dry wines that made Mosel famous, all the way sweet styles including Auslese and Spatlese. To navigate this array, Molitor employs a distinctive colour-coded capsule system (white for dry, green for off-dry, gold for sweeter styles), with stars denoting increasing complexity.

Wonderful ageing potential.
