Tasting note

A beautifully refined Shiraz, with the texture of top Burgundy, this has fragrant, delicate aromas of freesia, clove, allspice and cinnamon, with allusions to both a summertime dusty vineyard track and the barrel cellar. After sitting in the glass a while, sumptuous, generous plum and cherry fruit builds in intensity. The wine caresses the palate, with its super-silky texture gorgeous fruit and the merest touches of eucalyptus and liquorice. Beautifully-proportioned, with just the right levels of acidity and tannin, this is fully ready to enjoy straight away. If you want to cellar some, it should also be very long-lived and should evolve beautifully over at least another 15 years. Michael Limited Release is made from the top 2% of Wynns Shiraz production, and only produced in top vintages. Shiraz was the first variety planted here in 1857 by John Riddoch, and the fruit of some of the earliest vines planted is used in this wine.

In the press

94/100 - This has a very fine, fresh red-plum and mulberry nose with a cedary and leafy edge. The palate has fine but firm tannins, set in an elegant shape. It carries effortlessly long and holds impressive focus. Drink or hold.

16.5/20 - Youthful and vibrant purple. Distinctive floral and eucalypt note on the nose. Such softness of fruit with some sweet notes and surprisingly soft tannins. Attractive and long and complex. I am surprised at how rounded the tannins are here already.

Unique Selling Point

Wynns is the largest land owner of vineyards in Coonawarra and its world renowned terra rossa.

Coonawarra is perched on a low limestone dune, situated 80 kilometres from the sea. This highly sort after location, has intensely red terra rossa soils running in a narrow 20-kilometre strip from Penola in the south to Glenroy in the north.

Vinification

The region's international reputation comes from this regionally specific terra rossa. The unique combination of this rich red soil and a cool southerly climate is optimal for growing intensely flavoured grapes.
