Tasting note

This is a great, intense Riesling Grand Cru with excellent ageing potential, from Alsace's most renowned producer of wines from this noble grape. With time, its youthful honeysuckle and peach aromas will give way to deeper, richer beeswax, black truffle, honey and crushed rock character, while maintaining superb freshness and vibrancy. Awesome wine.

In the press

98/100 - Very complex, with a kaleidoscopic mix of youthful and maturing aromas, plus an intense tarragon character that doesn’t neatly fit in either of those characters. Quite some chopped-almond richness on the concentrated, medium- to full-bodied palate. However, the most extraordinary thing about this wine is the enormous, stony minerality that washes over you at the extremely long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

95+/100 - 2019 Geisberg is very intense and concentrated on the clear and elegant bouquet that indicates ripe and intense fruit. Powerful, rich yet elegant and mineral on the palate, with a long, intense and powerful finish, this Riesling is an almost too rich to be enjoyed at this early stage. The aging capacity is great, though.  Drink 2030-2060.

Viticulture

The Geisberg Grand Cru is less than nine hectares of prime vineyard upon a steep slope facing due south and nestled between the Grands Crus of Kirchberg and Osterberg. The soils are derived from Muschelkalk marl, conquina, sandstone and gypsum, and old vines, ideal exposure to the sun and the small steep terrasses make it a unique and complex terroir.

Vinification

On a steep,south-facing hillside, at less than nine hectares, the unique terroir of Geisberg is a jewel of Alsace, with Muschelkalk marl, conquina, sandstone and gypsum soils. Cooling winds promote extended hang time, resulting in intense, complex Riesling with fantastic ageing potential. This wine is bottle-aged at Trimbach for five years prior to release.

Food Match

Delicious with fish, poultry and veal and sea scallops. Traditionally served in Alsace with goose and pork and with Alsacian meats.
