Tasting note
A great, intense Riesling Grand Cru from Alsace’s leading Riesling producer, with superb ageing potential. Its easy first impression belies serious concentration from an outstanding site. With time, honeysuckle and peach evolve into beeswax, truffle, honey and crushed rock, all while retaining freshness and vibrancy.
In the press
95/100 - The 2018 Geisberg Riesling is deep, very intense and aromatic on the nose that represents the very dry and warm vintage. Full-bodied, rich and very powerful on the palate, this is a massive and muscular, luckily also saline-finishing Riesling that is still a bit edgy and will still need years to refine and gain in finesse. It is doubtlessly a complex and potential wine. Drink 2030-2060.
Viticulture
Geisberg fruit has long featured in Cuvée Frédéric Emile, but when Trimbach leased more vines from the Couvent de Ribeauvillé, the nuns requested a pure Grand Cru. This <9 ha south-facing slope, fully planted with Riesling, has marl, sandstone, and gypsum soils, old vines, and cool Vosges winds, yielding complex, age-worthy wines.
Vinification
Our grapes are selected at maturity then crushed and delicately pressed in a pneumatic press. Vinified in a dry style in stainless steel vats. No malolactic fermentation, or long ageing on lees in order to preserve freshness, liveliness and fruity aromas. Bottled in spring, then 7 years of ageing minimum in the cellar.
Food Match
Delicious with fish, poultry and veal and sea scallops. Traditionally served in Alsace with goose and pork and with Alsacian meats.
