Tasting note
This is a fabulous treat, with honeyed botrytis character overlaid by Gewürztraminer's classic lychee, canteloupe and stem ginger personality. Even in this lusciously sweet wine, the deft hand of Pierre Trimbach, "Master of Balance," is clearly at work. The flavours are ripe yet restrained, and there is just the right level of acidity to offset the sweetness.
Viticulture
Grapes are sourced from Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauville and very old vines planted at the Muelforst site in Hunawihr. The well-drained vineyards, facing South, contain argilo-cacaire soils over a deep limestone base, excellent for growing Gewurztraminer. The yield is only 25 hl/ha.
Vinification
This wine is made from botrytised noble Gewurztraminer, hand-selected and from the Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauville and very old vines planted at the Muelforst site in Hunawihr. With very low crop yield of only 25 hl/ha, and made in only exceptional years, it has over 80 g/l natural sugar, which harmonises perfectly with the fresh character.
