Tasting note
A brilliant, deep crimson and ruby colour opens into a heady perfume of rose petals, ripe raspberries, red and black cherries, cranberries and blood plums. Complex secondary notes weave through the bouquet, showcasing warm earth, fresh beetroot, kirsch, truffles, five-spice, liquorice and orange rind. A distinct regional and vineyard ironstone and ferrous slaty minerality pins the fruit aromas down. Highly concentrated, structural and powerful yet remarkably delicate. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly coiled, bursting with juicy plum and raspberry. Unlike standard primary, confection-like fruit profiles, it layers its flavours down a crunchy spine with crisp, vibrant acidity. A high proportion of whole-bunch fermentation (60%) contributes firm, powdery, and silken tannins that work alongside subtle layers from 11 months of aging in seasoned French oak. The finish is long, exceptionally persistent, fresh, and deeply savoury with lingering notes of minerals and spice.
Viticulture
The Farvie vineyards sit on ironstone gravel hilltops above the Frankland River, yielding wines with a distinct, high-quality ferrous character. Swinney's passion for bush vine viticulture produces deeply site-specific fruit. Though labor-intensive and requiring patience, hand-tending these low-yielding vines makes the effort worth it.
Vinification
Farvie Grenache is crafted from Frankland River bush vines grown on ironstone gravel hilltops. Hand-harvested in a meticulous three-pass process, 15% whole-bunch fruit is co-fermented with 6% Mourvèdre via wild yeasts. After 10 days on skins, it is basket-pressed into seasoned French oak for 11 months, then bottled unfined with minimal filtration.
Food Match
Opulent yet elegant, this intense, ultra-precise wine pairs perfectly with smoky barbecued veggies, grilled portobello and halloumi. Its depth also complements gamey dishes like duck, goose, or pheasant with honey-roasted root vegetables.
