Tasting note
A showstopper of a wine, fragrant with wild berries and spice, with a hit of dark chocolate following a mouthful of dark fruit.
In the press
From another smaller south-east-facing parcel (1.96ha), slightly higher than Maria Teresa, at 190 - 210m. Similarly vinified, but aged in 100% new French oak, Vinha de Ponte is darker, broader-shouldered and more savoury. A cloak of broad, ripe tannins frames its brooding core of blackcurrant and berry fruit, with smoky clove, black pepper, stewed mint and esteva nuances and nutty, savoury oak. Iron fist in a velvet glove. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040.
The 2016 Vinha da Ponte, a field blend from very old vines (100 years), was aged in new French oak for 20 months. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Elegant and carefully concentrated—meaning you can feel the concentrated fruit but without jam and sloppiness—this brooding Ponte has a big kick on the finish. Powerful, intense and stern, it doesn't show a lot of expressive fruit compared to the Maria Teresa (despite some six hours of double decanting)—it never does when young. It typically develops later and always lacks Maria Teresa's lively personality overall. Despite its brooding nature, this still seems exceptional, though. It is a very fine Ponte that has the potential for long ageing (perhaps even better than indicated) and development in the cellar. Drink 2024-2050.
Viticulture
Vinha da Ponte takes its name from a small 1.96 hectare plot of vines that are over 100 years old, located above a roman bridge ('ponte' in Portuguese). The vineyard is purely south-facing and tends to produce powerful immensely ageworthy wines. It is only bottled in years of exceptional quality and under very limited number of bottles.
Vinification
The grapes are foot trodden in traditional stone trough or lagares at Quinta do Crasto, and the wine is then aged for 20 months in French oak barrels at the Barrel Cellar under strictly controlled temperature and humidity conditions.
