Tasting note
Intense and lifted aromas of cigar box, tobacco leaf, spices, cedar and vanilla, combined with fresh dark berries and ripe plums. A rich, full and round palate of great balance, displaying rich Douro berry fruit characters and a delicious savoury edge, with integrated tannins and a great length of finish.

In the press
93/100 - The 2022 Reserva Old Vines—or Reserva Vinhas Velhas, as it's labeled in Portugal—comes from a field blend of 30 to 40 different varieties from vines averaging 80 years of age. It's a serious, ripe and spicy Douro red with plenty of aromas of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs, very open and aromatic. It feels riper this year and is still quite tannic and marked by the élevage in wood. I'd wait to pull the cork. Drink 2026-2032
Viticulture
The grapes (25-30 different varieties), coming from parcels of old vines, were taken to the winery in 25 kg plastic boxes and inspected on a sorting table on arrival. The soil is schist and the vineyards are planted on socalcos (terraces supported by stone walls), with a Southeast facing aspect.
Vinification
The grapes were then completely destemmed and slightly crushed. After this, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Once the alcoholic fermentation was completed, the grape were gently pressed using hydraulic presses. 85% matured in French oak barrels and 15% in American oak for about 16 months.
Food Match
Ideal with hearty stews and roasted joints. Also excellent with game.
