Tasting note

An extraordinary wine from a unique place on earth, Ossian is the fruit of vines almost 200 years old - survivors of the Phylloxera pandemic that scourged the world's vineyards in the late 19th Century. It has a lovely rich, lush juicy-ripe pear fruitiness; strongly reminiscent of young white Burgundy. This is followed by a green fennel herbal character that sets it apart as something distinct and utterly unique. Also akin to Burgundy is the finely-applied veneer of top-quality oak, which enhances but does not obscure the wine's singular personality. Underneath all this is a tight, grippy 'mineral' character, suggesting that, while enjoyable now, this should also develop beautifully over a few years. The ancient vines have never been grafted, and have developed their own extensive root system deep into the sand and slate terroir that has protected them for centuries, and which contributes greatly to the notable balance and expressiveness in the wine.

In the press

96/100 - This is very old-vine Verdejo – some approaching 200 years – from Nieva, a cool region south of Valladolid in the province of Segovia. Here, the signature sandy soils take centre stage, resulting in a precise and chiselled white wine that shows off the freshness of the area. Typical varietal bitterness (hemp and grapefruit pith) combines with subtle oak to create a mouthwatering and textured white that will certainly develop further over the coming years. Organic.

94/100 - From century-old vines in Nieva, this Verdejo is intensely concentrated yet sharply defined. Exotic notes of passionfruit and kiwi meet chiselled, linear acidity, leading to an austere, mineral finish. A touch of hemp, a hallmark of wines from this part of Segovia, adds a savoury twist. Aged nine months on lees in barrel, it’s complex, focused, and unmistakably old-vine in character. 2025-28

Vineyard

Amidst a sea of pine trees in the Segovian countryside, grapevines are rooted in sandy-slate soil. A poor soil that requires the vines to give their best in extreme climactic conditions. For the most part, the grapes come from vines over two centuries-years-old and have passed through several generations of winemakers.

Viticulture

Grapes from a selection of plots where the soils mark the radical difference of this environment: the sands and boulders prevented the arrival of phylloxera. A harsh climate, with freezing winters and hot summers, characterize the development of the authentic verdejo. The vines planted centuries ago have a unique genetic diversity.

Vinification

Ossian is the result of assembling the individual vinification of each small plot. Hand-harvest and after a light pressing, the must is transferred to vats and wooden barrels between 228 and 600 liters. Bottled after 9 months of aging on its lees.
