Tasting note
Voluptuous and expressive, this wine shows fresh almond pastry, pink grapefruit zest, and roasted hazelnut aromatics. Wild fermentation with full solids adds a flinty complexity and the extended time on fine lees contributes a delicious savoury character to the palate which is powerful yet defined by a fine frame of natural acidity.
Viticulture
Located on the bend of the Margaret River, this old vineyard grows on unique micaceous and granitic soils. The Chardonnay rows are on a steep, northerly aspect running in a northwest, southeast orientation. The river channels the Ocean breeze providing a unique microclimate.
Vinification
Small, concentrated bunches were hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, with juice run straight to oak on full solids. Native yeast fermentation took place in French oak barriques (around 40% new). Batonnage was guided by flavour, with no MLF to preserve natural acidity. The wine was racked to tank in November and bottled in January 2024.
