Tasting note
From one of California's Grand Cru vineyards, it starts with the intense aromas of rich blackberry, blackcurrant and pepper aromas, the palate has striking power and breadth. This leads to a sweep of dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, blackcurrant The fine tannins and outstanding balance of power create a wine of poise and elegance.
Viticulture
Crafted entirely from Zinfandel vines planted in 1893 in the revered Monte Rosso Vineyard, named for its iron-rich, red volcanic soils. Though yields are small, the old gnarly vines produce exceptional fruit with deep concentration.
Vinification
The grapes were picked and sorted by hand. They were then gravity fed into small, open top tanks for a three-day cold soak before primary fermentation. The wine was aged in a combination of French oak barrels (48% new) and American oak barrels (19% new) for a total of 15 months.
Food Match
This powerful wine is right at home with rich, intense meat dishes—beef, lamb, and venison, in particular—where its opulent fruit and elegant tannins can be the hero of the show.
