Tasting note
Aromas begin with ripe strawberries then evolve into fresh and dried red cherries. Complexity follows with chestnut, malt, and carob. Palate offers refreshing purity, cranberry-like tannins, and gentle structure. Woody, herbal, floral finish promises future complexity. Enjoy now or age for 10+ years. A delightful, evolving experience.
In the press
The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70-80 years old, and is aged in barrique.
Vineyard
From the oldest vineyard on the eponymous estate in Monforte d'Alba. The soil is typically Helvetian, with older formations. It consists of clayey, calcareous marl with a slightly grayish hue, alternating with siliceous sandstone. In some areas, the presence of calcium carbonate and iron lends a warmer color and a slight pinkish hue.
Viticulture
Nebbiolo from clones of Michet and Lampia grown at an altitude of approximately 400m above sea level.
Vinification
At least 2 years in small, lightly toasted French oak barrels and approximately 1 year in bottle.
Food Match
Furred game, braised meats, or otherwise very flavorful red meat dishes. Mature cheeses.
