Tasting note

Utterly succulent and elegant, this offers appealingly complex aromas of fresh cherries, roasted chestnuts, seasoned oak and autumnal forest walks. On the palate, the tannins are fabulously silky, and the wine evokes a sense of gentle ripeness, while remaining precise and focused.

In the press

97/100 - The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Cannubi is a fine and delicate wine, although there is a little more grit and richness in this warm vintage. The quality of the fruit is exceptional, especially its crisp ripeness. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, rose blossom, pink pepper and white limestone add considerable high-toned notes. The freshness is great and the fruit stays juicy, fueling a long, elegant finish. Drink 2026 - 2048.
Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
96/100 - Notes of crushed rocks leap from the 2020 Barolo Cannubi, which is vinified exactly the same way, but the terroir really shows its face in this wine. Offering exuberant aromas of ripe, fresh black raspberries and pure cherry candies, the palate is rich in its structure, with ripe tannins and broad shoulders, but it remains light on its feet, with loads of purity and a generous, elegant nature. Hold it another year and drink over the coming 15 or more years. It has loads to offer. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Viticulture

While 2020 was a "generous" year for much of the region, Cannubi's sand-rich soils allowed for better water management compared to heavier clays. However, some producers like Chiara Boschis still saw overall production drops of 30–40% due to the specific timing of spring frosts and late-season storms that required selective sorting.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts. The cap is emerged, with regular pigeage and remontage. The wine is aged for 24 months in French oak with light toasting. Roughly 30% is new. Minimal racking and no filtration to champion absolute complexity and structure. 1 further year is spent ageing in bottle prior to release
