Tasting note

Beautiful deep, intense colour. The nose reveals blackcurrant and blueberry aromas. Elegant and fresh on the palate, with soft tannins and great length. The style of the wine clearly displays its distinctive 'terroir'. This fairytale moated château is one of the oldest in the region.

In the press

97/100 - Aromas of chocolate and aromatic herbs. Medium-bodied, very balanced and accessible, with precise tannins and ethereal fruit. Approachable now, with the tannins tightening gently in the finish. Wonderful balance. Drink now or hold. 10 Years On retrospective (tasted January 2026).

94+/100 - I loved the 2016 Château d'Issan and this is a certainly a wine to seek out. Made from a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot from yields of 55 hectoliters per hectare, aged 18 months in 50% new oak, it has a beautiful perfume of blue fruits (cassis, blueberries, etc.) as well as hints of graphite, subtle oak, and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, with integrated acidity, a terrific mid-palate, and perfect balance, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and is going to cruise in good cellars for 20-25 years or more. It’s a beautiful, elegant, seamless wine that’s very much in the style of the vintage.

Viticulture

This 32 hectare property is situated on the ancient road between Cantenac and Margaux itself. The lovely chateau is surrounded by and old stone wall, which contains soil unique in Margaux and as a result the wines are atypical for the appellation, being more tannic and full bodied than usual. Age of vines: 22 years.

Vinification

The grapes are all hand picked and then carefully sorted before crushing. A very strict selection is made before blending and the wine is traditionally aged in oak barrels before bottling. Barrel Maturation: 18 months

Food Match

Spicy beef shanks with julienne carrots, provencal lamb with Mediterranean vegetables or hard cheeses are the most suitable pairings.
