Tasting note
Don Domingo Vicente Catena, Nicolas Catena Zapata's father, was famous in the 1930's for his deep dark red wine blend. This blend was sold in the French-styled bistros of Buenos Aires - the Paris of South America - as the finest wine from the Mendoza region. This glorious blend of Malbec and Petit Verdot, harvested from four disctinct vineyards in different passes for optimum ripeness, has oodles of character: jam-packed with blackberry and black cherry, with notes of violet and white pepper.
Viticulture
A blend of four Mendoza vineyards: Lunlunta, Gualtallary, Eugenio Bustos, and El Mirador, ranging from 920m to 1,450m elevation.
Vinification
This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration for 2-7 days at 50oF (10oC) to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for 10-20 days with a total maceration of 4-12 days. Wild Yeasts. Elevage: 8-14 months in French barrels. Barrel selection varies depending on vineyard and vintage - first, second and third use barrels used.
