Featured Six Pack – Everything Rhone

2009 Chapoutier Petite Ruche Crozes-Hermitage Blanc $29 – $24 in the mixed six

Very pure, with lots of white peach, chamomile, quinine and blanched almond notes that stay fresh and vibrant through the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2012. 600 cases imported

Wine Spectator Review:  90 points

2008 Les Combes D’Arnevel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc $30- $25 in the mixed six

Quite open, with a paraffin edge to the heather honey, dried green plum, blanched almond and verbena notes that linger on the slightly mature finish. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Roussane. An absolutely gorgeous and rich white that is in its prime of life!

2009 Windgap Orra  Grenache Based Blend, North Coast $27 – $22 in the mixed six

Made by Pax Mahle – winemaker for now defunct cult winery Pax. Same quality as the Pax wines at a fraction of the price. This particular wine is bright, with wonderful grainy/dusty tannins and a beautiful acidity. New world fruit meeting old world winemaking techniques.

2010 Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rouge Syrah Based Blend, Paso Robles

$22 – $18 in the mixed six

A wonderful and affordable choice for everyday drinking. The winery is owned by the Rhône’s own Château Beaucastel and is planted in Paso Robles with vines from that winery. It is literally the Rhône valley transplanted in Paso. Rich, unctuous and ripe with just the right amount of old world leather and earth.

2009 Wind Gap Griffin’s Lair Syrah, North Coast $49 – $41 in the mixed six

Same story as the Orra above. Only this time you have a dense and decadent expression of Syrah that is chewy and distinctly rustic in all the right ways. Loads of earth and tobacco on top of rich ripe blue fruit. Fabulous expression of the varietal here in the US.

2009 Château Coupe Roses Cuvée Orience Minervois, Languedoc-Roussillon-France

$31 – $26 in mixed six

A very cool wine from an almost unknown and seldom seen French appellation. This is the domaine’s luxury cuvée based on Syrah with 10% Grenache, made in barrels, about one-third of which are new. The Syrah comes from their best clay/limestone parcels high up on the plateau above the village. the Cuvée Orience presents meaty black fruit, with spice, earth, and elegance in spades. A great value for quality Syrah that opens up beautifully in a decanter.
